A Benefit for Dante
A whole cross-section of musicians will be out performing for 7-year-old Dante Emmett on Nov. 7.
The son of Tina S. Marie Band members Chael and Tina Emmett, who has autism, was misdiagnosed until finally being admitted to Legacy hospital with a ruptured appendix this summer. The family is now facing medical bills of $50,000 and are holding a fund-raising event at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7 at the Bossanova Ballroom, 722 E. Burnside St. Suggested donation is $10.
Performers include Fred Korman and Michael Allen Harrison; Alexa Wiley; Upper Left Trio; Tony Starlight; Tina S. Marie Band; Mary Gunn; Kenny Lee and the Sundowners; Michael Manning and the Carolina Pumpstation; Arz's Universe; Sam Manning and some surprise guests. There will be a raffle and auction a DVD will be filmed of the evening for future purchase to benefit Dante's medical bills. Eyewitness History Election Watch
The Urban League of Portland is hosting an election-night watching program from 6 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the Northeast Multicultural Senior Center, 5325 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The event caters to those 50 and over. Food, fun and friendship is promised as attendees discuss and watch coverage of the election.

Voters League Dinner
The Oregon League of Minority Voters is inviting the public to a free dinner 5:30-8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17, in Portland City Hall to celebrate its first year anniversary.
The agenda will include exotic ethnic food, birthday cake, dancing and a tribute to Portland lawyer and civil rights advocate Bill Crow, one of the founding members and the first chair of the non-profit, non-partisan group. To RSVP, contact the OLMV at (503) 289-7520 or [email protected].

Dr. Cornel West Speaks
Dr. Cornel West, one of America's champions for racial justice, will be speaking in Portland in January. His writing, speaking, and teaching weave together the traditions of the Black Baptist church, progressive politics and jazz.
His new book, "Hope on a Tightrope," available in November 2008, will challenge all those in search of deep wells of inspiration and new possibilities that marry the mind to the heart.
West will be speaking at 7 p.m. on Jan. 29, 2009 at the Newmark Theater inside the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, 1111 SW Broadway St.
