Washington program to recycle  old block foam

Vancouver, Wash. – Clark County residents have another opportunity to recycle their block foam for free Saturday, August 4, at Clark College. Collection hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot at 1900 Fort Vancouver Way, adjacent to the soccer field. The block foam collection event at Clark College occurs the first Saturday of each month.
The Block Foam Collection Program — which started as a partnership between Clark College, the City of Vancouver, Clark County and PC Plastics, a Portland-based recycling company — has been collecting and recycling block foam from households since December 2006. The program has collected more than a ton of material from hundreds of residents.
PC Plastics takes all the foam, grinds it to powder, mixes and melts it with special additives, and churns out pellets that maintain the same quality as virgin plastic. The pellets are then used locally by Panasonic Shikoku Electronics Corporation of America, Inc. in Vancouver to make parts for new Panasonic TVs.
The collection at Clark College accepts all block foam. The foam can be any color, but it must be clean and bagged/boxed. No plastic wrapped yellow urethane foam and no hot tub covers will be accepted. Peanuts that snap when bent are accepted if they are double-bagged. Please see PC Plastics web site at www.pcplastics.com for more details on what will be accepted.
Only Washington-licensed cars may participate. All participants must remain on site until staff have examined and accepted the material; unacceptable material will be returned to participants for disposal. No "dump and run" allowed. The program's continuation will depend upon public participation and quality of materials collected.
If you have questions or would like more information about this program, please contact the City of Vancouver Solid Waste Services at (360) 696-8186 or Clark County Solid Waste at (360) 397-6118 ext. 4352.
