Sun Schools Offer Host of Summer Activities

Reading, writing, math, art, cooking, band, sewing, computers, even manicure classes — these are some of the activities that SUN Community Schools are offering Portland kids weekdays this summer.
While classes are winding up at some sites, other programs will be in full swing through mid-August. Most locations also offer free lunches, and some have free breakfast as well.
Programs that continue through mid-August include the following:
• Arleta Elementary School, 5109 S.E. 66th Ave.: Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily through Aug. 16, Arleta offers a camp format with academic and recreational activities, along with athletics and computer and art classes. • Beaumont Middle School, 4043 N.E. Fremont St.: Beaumont's program runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Classes include cartooning, art, theater camp, fencing and tae kwon do. Call site manager Karen Aker, 503-916-5615, for information on specific classes and times.
• Gregory Heights Middle School, 7334 N.E. Siskiyou St.: Activities at this site, which operates from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Aug. 11, include circuit training, 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Monday and Wednesday; rock climbing, 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and theater class, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. • Grout Elementary School, 3119 S.E. Holgate Blvd.: Classes including cooking, dramatics, art and tie-dye run from 9:15 a.m. to noon and 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. A drop-in program runs from noon to 3 p.m. through Aug. 11.
