Re-Till Northeast Soil

Rejuvenation starts from the ground up — even when you're talking about rejuvenating the ground itself.
People of Purpose, a nonprofit group working with people who have suffered from drug and alcohol abuse, is hosting "Stop Pointing a Finger and Lend a Hand — A Day of Re-tilling the Soil," on Saturday, July 8. The event is a celebration of community spirit and pride, and aims to rejuvenate and reawaken the neglected soil of Northeast Portland with a cleanup of three sites: the corner of Northeast Failing Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard; the corner of North Albina Avenue and Killingsworth Street; and the corner of Northeast 15th Avenue and Killingsworth Street.
Volunteers for the cleanup can register from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. the day of the event at the following three locations: Hughes Memorial Church, 111 N.E. Failing St.; Jefferson High School, 5210 N. Kerby Ave.; and Cornerstone Community Church, 2216 N.E. Killingsworth St. After the work is done, volunteers can attend a celebration in Irving Park featuring a variety of bands from reggae to gospel. Attendees will be treated to free hot dogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings, and a family fun area will be set up with moon walk slide and other child-friendly events.
