The Skanner's 2009 23rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast was a resounding success. Over 900 people filled the halls of the Oregon Convention Center for a rousing breakfast celebrating the life and legacy of the slain civil rights leader. But more importantly, they heard about the future of civil rights in Oregon.
Monday's keynote speaker, John Kroger, Oregon's new attorney general, debuted his plan to bring a stack of signatures to the Legislature when asking for an office of civil rights enforcement. Kroger said he is committed to bringing polluters, financial scammers, and civil rights violators to justice, and he also said he will push for a drug treatment system in the state.
